Open Source Wood Challenge for EASA 2020 participants

Open Source Wood is an open collaboration and knowledge sharing platform for modular wood construction. Metsä Wood challenges all EASA community members to create a design using the elements and modules available at opensourcewood.com.

The Brief

The challenge is to design a modular multi-storey house concept.

Building can be e.g.

 a residential house,

 an assisted living facility,

 a school building,

 a hotel or

 an office

in an urban environment using the elements found at opensourcewood.com. The building should be suitable for offsite construction, i.e. modules or building components are light and easily transferable to the construction site.

The use and purpose of the building should respond to the challenges of urbanisation and increasing densification of city structures. The main question is, “How can modular wood construction be utilised in a developing urban environment in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way of using Open Source Wood elements. The main material of the building should be wood, and specifically Metsä Wood’s Kerto LVL. However hybrid solutions – combining wood with other

materials like steel and concrete – are welcome.

Award

The winner(s) will be awarded a total of €3000.

In addition, Metsä Wood also continuously rewards the best ideas shared at opensourcewood.com, and all the entries of this challenge are eligible. The jury reserves the right to change the allocation of the price within the total sum according to the
